How much does it cost to learn to drive?

Or how much are driving lessons? Those are common questions when it comes to learning to drive.

The answer is that it really does depend on what exactly you are asking. The DVSA has previously said that the average learner requires approximately 20 hours of practice with a qualified driver (friend or family), as well as around 45 hours of driving lessons with a qualified Driving Instructor. This is backed by the RAC (https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/learning-to-drive/how-to-pass-your-driving-test/). The DVSA Now state that there is no minimum number of lessons or hours you must practice in order to be ready for the road (https://www.gov.uk/driving-lessons-learning-to-drive/taking-driving-lessons).

The reason why its difficult to put a number on it, is because everyone is different. For some people, driving comes more naturally than others.

How much does it cost to learn to drive?

We have to answer that question with some other questions: How quickly do you learn, and how long will it take to become competent? When you drive, do you want to feel safe, confident and in control, or anxious and stressed? Learning to drive is a process that depends on the individual.

At SafeRoads Learner Driver Training, we will do our utmost to ensure that you get as much value out of your driving lessons as possible. If you can get private practice to help reinforce what you are learning with your Driving Instructor, then great, as long as you are practising what you are taught, and not being confused by a well-meaning friend or family member who is telling you to do it differently. For example we were once taught to always signal before moving off, but now its viewed as unnecessary to signal if there’s no one to benefit. That’s important because it means that we’re not just doing it out of habit, but rather because we have assessed that it’s useful and necessary to promote someone else’s safety.

At SafeRoads Learner Driver Training we will not give you driving lessons for the sake of it. When you are ready, we’ll put you forward, confident in the knowledge that you’re not wasting your time or money.
